Estimating a Polya frequency function2

چکیده

Abstract: We consider the non-parametric maximum likelihood estimation in the class of Polya frequency functions of order two, viz. the densities with a concave logarithm. This is a subclass of unimodal densities and fairly rich in general. The NPMLE is shown to be the solution to a convex programming problem in the Euclidean space and an algorithm is devised similar to the iterative convex minorant algorithm by Jongbleod (1999). The estimator achieves Hellinger consistency when the true density is a PFF2 itself.

Estimating a Polya Frequency Function

The problem of estimating a unimodal density and its mode has attracted a wide interest in the literature, beginning with the work of Barlow [1], Prakasa Rao, [7], Robertson, [8], and Wegman [13], [14] and continuing through [9], [2], [3], [5], and [4], who can be consulted for further references. Asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimators have been developed but may be messy an...

Bayesian Analysis of Dynamic Linear Topic Models

In dynamic topic modeling, the proportional contribution of a topic to a document depends on the temporal dynamics of that topic’s overall prevalence in the corpus. We extend the Dynamic Topic Model of Blei and Lafferty (2006) by explicitly modeling document-level topic proportions with covariates and dynamic structure that includes polynomial trends and periodicity. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo ...

Statistical Properties of Alternative National Forest Inventory Area Estimators

The statistical properties of potential estimators of forest area for the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program are presented and discussed. The current FIA area estimator is compared and contrasted with a weighted mean estimator and an estimator based on the Polya posterior, in the presence of nonresponse. Estimator optimality is evaluated both theoretically and via...

Using Prior Information about Population Quantiles in Finite Population Sampling

Many classical methods in finite population sampling have been developed to incorporate some fairly standard types of prior information about the population. When the prior information does not fall in the standard categories it can be difficult to find procedures which reflect the information and have good frequentist properties. Recently methods based on the empirical likelihood were consider...

Sign Changes in Linear Combinations of Derivatives and Convolutions of Polya Frequency Functions

We obtain upper bounds on the number of sign changes of linear combnatlons of derivatives and convolutions of Plya frequency functions using the variation diminishing properties of totally positive functions. These constitute extensions of earlier results of Karlin and Proschan.
